The former Brazilian leader has been detained after authorities found he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under domestic detention.

The ex-president was found guilty of orchestrating a government overthrow in September and handed more than 27 years in jail, but he continued under confinement pending appeals.

High Court Judge Justice Moraes said the move to detain the 70-year-old politician was a precautionary step after recent developments came to light.

This involved attempting to break his electronic bracelet and a summons to a public vigil that could "allow for a possible escape.

Court Filing Details Flight Fears

In a paperwork permitting the arrest, the judge said information from the centre monitoring his home detention suggested the former leader's aim to disable the tracking monitor to secure accomplishment in his escape.

This, it said, would be made easier by the disorder caused by the gathering called by his son.

His child, Flávio, who serves as a legislator, called for a gathering of his supporters near his father's house to take place on the weekend.

Details of Guilty Verdict
