The EU could “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the United States on five European individuals involved in fighting digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe including the French president charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions were placed on individuals that were at the heart of campaigns to introduce legislation governing US-based technology firms.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “This government will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the decision.
