Space Traveler Shares Mental Health Struggle After Deluge of Backlash After Historic Trip
A pioneering space traveler has spoken candidly about her emotional downturn after enduring a “tsunami of harassment” in the wake of a landmark journey to the edge of space.
Amanda Nguyen – celebrated as a researcher and activist – was part of the short-duration mission in April, which also featured high-profile passengers.
The much-publicized journey was widely scrutinized by some, who questioned its cost and environmental footprint.
Reflecting on the ordeal, the astronaut, who was celebrated as the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the negative reaction buried her dreams under an torrent of sexist abuse.
“I said the emotional pain might endure for years,” the astronaut shared in a social media post, recalling a check-in call from a fellow crew member in the period after the landing.
She described the press attention and digital reaction as an “onslaught no human brain has evolved to endure”.
“Stuck in Texas, I spent a week unable to rise from my bed,” she confessed. “Even a month on, a phone call ended with me hanging up, weeping uncontrollably.”
Eclipsed by Backlash
Ms. Nguyen, who has conducted studies in gynecological science and conducted tests during the mission, said every professional achievement – from her studies and astronaut training to the symbolic importance of her roots – was buried under the tide of sexist vitriol.
She is most acclaimed for her tireless campaigning fighting for justice for sexual assault survivors.
Her own dream of becoming an astronaut was deferred after being assaulted during her college days, leading to a protracted legal battle.
A Path to Recovery
Months following fulfilling her dream, she noted the “fog of grief has started to lift”, and she expressed gratitude the well-wishers whose messages of encouragement were her lifeline. “You were my salvation,” she affirmed.
She noted that even with the backlash, significant positive outcomes had emerged from the flight, including spotlight on her women's health research and new advocacy opportunities.
