The Trump phenomenon's most illuminating and characteristic moments – not its most crucial, nor most harsh, nor most hazardous, nor most foolish, but perhaps its most illuminating – emerged earlier this harvest season. During the period of several weeks, the American president started showing the public his intentions for a gilded ballroom twice the size of the White House and subsequently started unilaterally ripping down the East Wing to build it.
He has committed acts 10,000 times as bad – the current estimate of deaths from his cuts to foreign assistance stands at 600,000 and rising, and recently research projected his fossil fuel policies would cause deaths 1.3 million more. Yet nothing as characteristic. No other president would have risked – really, no former commander would have contemplated – unilaterally destroying significant portions of the executive mansion in order to erect a palace-inspired entertainment space, with the direct cooperation of numerous America's wealthiest, almost all of whom maintain dealings with public institutions.
We moved from 'the gentle will obtain the world' to 'the humble will perish of cholera'
As bewildering as it is to observe the president try to upend the established notion regarding democracy and substitute it with its direct contrary, there remains a substantial portion of Americans who might not perceive it entirely new. This includes individuals like us – among senior generations almost a majority – who were educated as mainline Protestant Christians.
We have witnessed across decades as politically conservative religious groups transformed the Christ we learned about into exactly the opposite of our perception of his character. Fundamentally, they transformed an image of affection into a figure of hate who blesses exactly the harshness that he criticized in biblical teachings; this change developed more slowly, over decades rather than months, yet it remains unsettling through similar means, a disorienting gut punch for many of us.
A Harmful Christianity Gains Ground
So let me first describe the Christ that I grew up with, as conceptually the Savior is the core within Christian belief, and since the rapidly expanding group within America may possess limited understanding of him because they identify as skeptics or agnostics or religiously unaffiliated. I raise no objection with any of these traditions, nor with any other faith; yet I maintain that exist valuable insights of significant worth in biblical accounts.
It is emphatically definitely not the account of a mighty king arising; conversely, a baby is born to homeless parents in an automotive shelter, who are forced to hastily depart to another nation to escape secret police. The apparent and direct truth that the Jesus of the gospels advocates for a form of radical love centered on the needy has perpetually caused Christian religion somewhat of a scandalous religion: appealing to the masses, but owing to its intrinsic extremism needing to be restrained. During the 1950s it was controlled by dilution – The Protestant faith was so dominant that it essentially baptized the status quo.
A Battle for the Best Within Us
Therefore I have felt inspired to witness the persistent defiance regarding Trump emerge during the previous year. It has provided significant comfort to help build the movement that has protested openly through repeated demonstrations, and likely has encouraged citizens to show up in large quantities during minor elections. We will need to continue it, and with identical determination, displaying national flags during all protests and appeals to the highest qualities within national heritage.
