Uche Fuels Straightforward Palace Win at Irish Side Shelbourne.
Even though entering their first-ever European adventure, Oliver Glasner's side are adapting at a rapid pace. Missing key players like forward Jean-Philippe Mateta and defender Daniel Muñoz, the Eagles left Dublin with a commanding result that all but guarantees them a spot in the Europa Conference League playoffs.
A further victory in their upcoming fixture against Finland's KuPS should be enough to seal direct entry to the knockout stages, particularly following a prior stumble against Strasbourg.
Fringe Players Seize the Moment
This match provided a chance for some of Palace's lesser-used players to shine. Christantus Uche, in only his second start since joining on loan from Getafe, notched the scoring with a clinical finish. Forward Eddie Nketiah contributed a another, scoring for the second game in succession.
A Shelbourne team that had concluded their domestic season were no match even for a largely rotated Palace lineup. The visitors were further depleted by the reports that Mateta and Muñoz are out with leg problems.
Control Asserted from the Outset
In spite of heavy rain in Dublin, Palace quickly took control. A flowing passing sequence in the 11th minute, sparked by Daichi Kamada's clever pass, allowed Nketiah to set up Uche for a straightforward finish.
Midfielder Adam Wharton came close minutes later, driving a long-range effort over the bar. Nketiah subsequently appealed for a penalty after bursting into the area, but the referee waved away the appeals.
The formerArsenal striker did not have wait long to find his goal, prodding home from close range after Uche's effort had hit the post.
Shelbourne were hanging on desperately. Full-back Kameron Ledwidge was fortunate to escape a booking for two agricultural challenges on Yeremy Pino, before Chris Richards rattled the crossbar with a header from a corner.
Yeremy Pino Seals the Contest
The contest was effectively over eight minutes before half-time. Yeremy Pino weaved past a series of comically weak challenges before coolly slotting a shot past keeper Wessel Speel to extend the lead to 3-0.
Following the break, manager Oliver Glasner took the chance to rest several players like Kamada and Wharton. Substitute Romain Esse almost scoring his first touch, but saw his effort blocked.
Esse was incredibly unlucky later on, seeing one attempt strike off both posts before being clasped on the line. Uche then missed a glaring chance, showing there is still room for improvement in his game.
The only concern for Palace was a second-half knock to Justin Devenny, who limped off. This paved the way for 17-year-old striker Benji Casey to make his first-team debut, rounding off an otherwise perfect night for the visiting side.
