A recent study reveals that people who discontinue blockbuster weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt traditional lifestyle regimens.
Research printed in a prominent medical journal points out that while overweight people often shed a large proportion of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"Individuals using these drugs should be informed of the danger of rapid rebound weight gain when the therapy is stopped," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain means a reversion to starting weight in about one and a half years.
Weighing Treatments
The analysis, which reviewed 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the results of the injectable medications with other pills.
Researchers note that people who lose weight through dieting generally see a more gradual weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
The Reason for the Quick Regain
Nutrition scientists propose the mode of action of the jabs accounts for the accelerated regain.
The injections imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates appetite.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the system to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and could diminish sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement results in hunger is uncontrolled, making overeating a significant risk."
A Lifelong Issue?
Medical guidelines suggest the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.
Many experts contend that, due to the likelihood of relapse, the therapy should be considered life-long.
This view is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "highlight the chronic character of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
User Testimonies
Individuals who have discontinued the jabs report a intense return of appetite.
"It was like a trigger flipping and I was suddenly ravenous," described one woman.
This challenge is worsened if individuals have not adopted permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.
Widespread Use
Figures suggest that millions of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand continuing to grow.
- Adoption is more common among females than males.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many access the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Ultimately, clinicians caution that while the jabs are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone cure and maintained weight loss hinges on ongoing behavioural management.
